Ziploc Omelets to the rescue

December 26th, 2007, 2:20 pm by Katie Mozurkewich

First of all, I hope all of you had a very Merry Christmas with your families! We had a great day, and we’ll be opening and building toys for the next three weeks. I feel sorry for the trash man the week after Christmas. Our house alone could use four large black bins today.

Second, I tried a new (to me) recipe on Christmas morning and I had to tell you about it because it made my life easier for a minute. And that’s always important to me. If you still have some holiday visitors in your house, this could be a life saver for you too.

Ziploc Omelets
Boil a pot of water. Crack one or two eggs into several quart size freezer bags, (but no more than two eggs in each bag). Then have everyone in the house add to their bag anything else they like such as green peppers, onions, cheese, crumbled bacon, leftover ham, salsa, etc.

Mark your bags with a sharpie and boil all the bags simultaneously for 13 minutes. Voila! Everyone’s got what they want, and everyone can sit down and eat together.

What a relief when no one is left standing at the stove all morning.

Enjoy the rest of your holiday week and have a safe and Happy New Year!

Not-so-crowded bed

December 13th, 2007, 10:24 am by Michelle Reese

I’ve had a “my life will never be the same” moment at our house. My nearly 3-year-old daughter can now, officially, without problem, crawl out of her crib. So this morning, and the last five mornings, I’ve woken up with one child on one side of me, one on the other, and my 20-pound pug nestled between us all. Oh, and yes, my husband has a place, also.

 Talk about a family bed!

It started Friday night/Saturday morning. I woke up around 4 a.m. and sensed … something. I sat up and at the foot of my bed was my daughter. Yikes. She crawled up on the bed, snuggled next to me and fell back asleep.

I lay anticipating, anxious, waiting for her to cry out.

 It never came.

It only actually happened once in the last few nights since she reached this milestone – and then it was in the hotel up north.

So while I’ve dreaded this moment for months, I’m happy to say it hasn’t been as bad as I thought.

You see, both my kids either scream out in their sleep, talk or walk. My son does the latter two of the three and my daughter does the first two. Luckily, I’ve not had to deal with it much because she’s been in her crib, where she just settles herself back down to sleep.

If I was awake enough at night, I would place them both back in their beds. And hopefully, once it’s not so chilly, I’ll be able to do that.

But for now, we’ll likely have a few months of a very full family bed. Not a bad way to wake in the morning.

And on the upside, I’ll likely not have a huge bill to heat the house at night. We just keep each other warm.

From the mouths of babes

My nearly 3-year-old is far too verbal for her own good. It first started several months ago when she used the word “actually.” I accidentally referred to her by her brother’s name. “Actually, mom, I’m a girl,” she responded. Yikes! Where did she get that? And she’s 2.

Then this week I overheard her use a phrase of mine: “Dang it!” I was packing for our recent trip up north and said that in reference to forgetting something. Yup… guess what came out of her mouth? And daycare told me she said, “Crud” and then head-butted her teacher (who was so in shock she just laughed). Yes that’s another word of mine. Well, thankfully we don’t use any other foul language in my home or I’d certainly be getting daily calls from her teachers!
