In a few weeks, my son will start kindergarten. My husband and I made the decision last spring to have him repeat the class. It’s not a total repeat - he was in an integrated kindergarten class last year and he’ll be in a mainstream classroom this year. Read the rest of this entry »

Home Security

July 17th, 2008, 4:42 pm by Katie Mozurkewich

So here’s the thing. I truly do realize that I’m not perfect. I’m nowhere near the perfect mom, housekeeper, wife, office aide, taxi driver, babysitter, cook. That’s obvious! But I think that on most days, I’m really trying my best. I’ll slack off here and there occasionally, it’s true. But I generally have my reasons. Like sleeping. And if you think about it, I probably work more hours in a week than even the most loyal employee at any corporation. If I added up the weekly hours I spend at “work” (in my home), I should be paid for a 40 hour work week plus about 20 hours of overtime. And that does not include the hours spent at my “real” job.

Now, add in the fact that it’s summertime. My kids are spending a lot more time at home, causing what I figure to be approximately 50% more damage to the house than during the school year. I haven’t had a chance to do the math yet, but I think I’d have to come up with at least 8 more hours per week to cover the increase in toys strewn about, sticky juice on the floor and everything I own relocated daily. There goes sleeping.

But I’m not doing it. I refuse to kill myself so that they can have a clean canvas to destroy each day. Instead I think I’ll leave those blocks there for another time. They’ll probably get back to playing with them again eventually, right? And if they don’t, at least my house is safe from cat burglars.

When will mommy get it together?

July 17th, 2008, 10:30 am by Michelle Reese

I have a few confessions to make - I caved to my daughter this morning and took a shower with Little People. Lots of them. My daughter wanted to bring a few toys in the shower. I conceded - and five became 10. Read the rest of this entry »

July 17th, 2008, 10:21 am by Michelle Reese

I took my children - 3 and 6 - shoe shopping the other night. Both had near meltdowns by the time we were leaving - shoeless. It’s my fault. Read the rest of this entry »

Kidless for a week

My house is quiet at night. I’m sleeping without interruption. And my mornings? I got two loads of laundry done before coming to work today. Read the rest of this entry »

New job

July 7th, 2008, 2:23 pm by Michelle Reese

Late last month I switched jobs at the Tribune. After more than two years on the copy desk in both a part-time and full-time position, I’ve returned to reporting. I’m now covering schools in Chandler - public and schools of choice (charter and private).

Though new to this district, I’m not new to school reporting. Several years ago I covered Mesa, Scottsdale, Fountain Hills and Cave Creek school districts for the paper. But much has changed since then.

For one thing, this paper did not have a Web site six years ago. Now, I get instant responses once my story is published online. And many more people have the chance to read it - from all over the globe.

Being new to this beat also means the challenge of trying to meet Chandler moms and dads, teachers and others associated with education. I look forward to hearing from any of you who want to share their stories with me.

Goin’ fishing

July 7th, 2008, 10:34 am by Michelle Reese

This is a birthday I won’t soon forget - probably one of my best in years (of course, maybe that’s because I don’t quite remember what I did last year!).

We took the kids fishing for the first time. With a Spider-Man fishing pole and a Barbie fishing pole in hand, we drove to Woods Canyon Lake. My first thought was - how beautiful! My next was - how quiet! My kids are going to be too loud! But we found a spot between two families, put on the bait (worms and marshmellows) and Papa and Daddy gave a few tips. My daughter didn’t do it for long, but my son picked up on how to cast his line (even demanding no one help him when it was tangled).

I thought we would be there for 20 minutes - it was nearly two hours. He really got the hang of it - throwing it quite far into the lake (and only once catching it on a log that nearly put my husband into the water). We saw dragonflies, butterflies, boaters and kayakers. We watched white clouds in the sky and black beetles on the ground. I was so awed by my son’s determination. I loved the simpliness of it all, and the quiet.

Nope, we didn’t catch a bite. But as my daughter and I played “go fish” with a found deck of cards and my son loved his new-found skills, I was at peace, even as I remembered I was one year older.
