Mom’s heart stops - but everything is fine

September 30th, 2008, 5:05 pm by Michelle Reese

I was writing a post about a discipline issue I had with my 6-year-old son last night when I got a call from the school. I was about to hit “publish” when the voice from after-school care on the other line said, “We have him signed up to be here today. But he’s not here.”

And then, “Could someone have picked him up? A grandparent? An aunt?”

No. My voice went into panic mode. My co-workers saw me stand up and grab my purse and keys. While on the cell phone with one person at the school on one side of the campus, I used my desk phone to call the school office.

I asked if he could have been put on the bus by mistake instead of taken over to after-school care. “Do you know the bus number?”

No. So they had to look it up. It was only seconds, but it felt longer. Then the answer came. It’s Tuesday. He’s in art club at the school in another room.

I was thinking it was Wednesday. If I’d remembered it was Tuesday, I wouldn’t have panicked. The regular after-school teacher is getting married this week and she knows the schedule. But she’s not there today and the sub did not know of my son’s one-day-a-week change to the schedule.

Forget the post on discipline. Let me just show you the heart-shaped pizza I made my kids last night because I love them - even if they don’t always make good choices or say things like, “Mommy I don’t like you.”

And I was dearly reminded of that today.

When meatballs make a good breakfast

September 29th, 2008, 1:08 pm by Michelle Reese

Friday morning I went to the kitchen to discover we were out of milk, hashbrowns and eggs. Given that those are the three staples my kids eat for breakfast, I had to improvise. I took a few things out and put them on the table. The kids were thrilled.

So, to narrate, my son had meatballs, my daughter ate veggies and BBQ chips, and I had olive dip and tortilla chips.

And yes, I got to the grocery store on Saturday!

(The pliers were to fix the broken water filter, FYI!)

Moms, need something to do this weekend?

September 26th, 2008, 1:38 pm by Michelle Reese

We’ve got a few team meetings this weekend, but if I had the time, here’s what I would do:

Desert Breeze Park, just south of Ray Road between Rural and McClintock roads in Chandler, sounds like a great place to be when the weather starts to change. We are missing a birthday party there because of the sports meetings, but if we could, that’s where we’d go!

The Phoenix Zoo and Fisher Price are hosting “Arizona’s Largest Playdate” 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It looks like a blast for the younger set.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will hold “Kids eat free” during Sunday’s 1:10 p.m. game at Chase Field. You’ll need a coupon (and yes, it’s in the Tribune!).

It’s September. So why are Christmas songs in my car?

September 24th, 2008, 11:59 am by Michelle Reese

About a week ago, my daughter (once again) found the pile of CDs I keep in my car (yes, CDs. Not an MP3 player - which I wouldn’t have a CLUE how to use in the car). And she quietly went through them, flipping from one to the other until she found THE CD. The one we played last year from November on. The one I THOUGHT I had put away out of the car.

Nope.

So as I’m sitting here trying to write a story, “Merry Christmas St. Nick” and a Goofy-version of “Rudolph” play in my head. It’s a Disney-based CD of Christmas tunes, complete with Donald’s nephews singing about all the toys they want for Christmas and Minnie and Mickey and the rest of the gang. And it’s not even October.

Oh, and at Costco last night I saw Christmas light displays.

I full on expect my kids to be asking to write letters to Santa before we even get their Halloween costumes picked out.

But as far as the tunes, I can’t resist. My 3-year-old daughter has started to memorize the words and it’s just adorable to hear her sing in the back seat. There’s one song, we call it a “lullaby,” that I sing in the car and she asked me yesterday, “Mommy, can I sing with you?” and then when it was done, “Mommy, can we do the lullaby song again? I like you to sing.”

Bam! The repeat button was hit and the singing continued. Better find other Christmas CDs in the house or my kids are going to like the Goofy version of songs better than the Ole’ Blue Eyes CD I love.

Mom, I want the camera

September 22nd, 2008, 12:26 pm by Michelle Reese

I cleared out some of the pictures on the digital camera this weekend and found these. Since most of the photos in my scrapbooks are of the kids - I probably should keep them. But then again, maybe this is WHY I don’t keep photos of myself around! I can’t help it. When one of my kids picks up the camera - I can’t just smile and say ‘cheese.’ Maybe that’s why they don’t either!

Scholarship available for high school seniors

September 19th, 2008, 11:44 am by Michelle Reese

I received a notice about a scholarship open to Arizona high school seniors. The deadline has been extended to Oct. 3. It is for a $4,000 scholarship ($1,000 per year). Here are the details:

The Arizona Dream Builder Foundation will offer three, four-year scholarships, to be awarded during a dinner. Information is available on the foundation Web site.

Students applying must demonstrate, through school and/or community leadership and activities, a commitment to the tenets of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Letters of support must accompany the application.

Mom, five more minutes? Pleeeeze!

September 19th, 2008, 9:59 am by Michelle Reese

I need to write my story for work, but I just keep thinking about an evening earlier this week. After a very, very rare dinner “out” with the kids (Panda Express counts as “going out,” right?), and another game of tag down in the kitchen, I marched the kids upstairs for a bath.

And the stall tactics began.

Bath time is my time. That is, that’s when I let the kids sit in the tub for an hour playing while I do some reading (inevitably pages get wet, but I don’t care). I saw this cute scrapbook page on kids’ bedtime stall tactics. When I got the kids out of the bath, I ran downstairs, grabbed my camera, and started shooting all of the plans my kids try (successfully) to put off bedtime off just a bit longer.

Stall tactic No. 1: “Mom, can we play? Pleeeze!” Lately, the kids have brought out their their LeapPad Readers. But sometimes it’s a card game. Sometimes it’s Legos. Always, it’s fun. And since I’m gone all day at work, it’s usually the only time I get to play with their toys.

Stall tactic No. 2: “Mom, I need a drink!” Well, honestly, if I don’t let them get a drink then, I’ll be marching downstairs in the middle of the night for one.

Stall tactic No. 3: “Mom, we’re hungry!” The evening snack of choice in my house is a bowl of Cheez-it Crackers and Cheerios. I don’t know how it got started, but I remember when: my son was about 3 and he’s now 6!

Stall tactic No. 4: “Mom, one more book.” I’m a sucker. I love resting in bed with them and reading.

Finally, 9 o’clock rolls around (two hours after we started baths) and we all fall, exhausted, asleep in one twin bed.

Tag in the kitchen? Why not?!? Ball in the house? Bring it on

I don’t know how it started, but sometime in the last two weeks, a mean game of tag-in-the-kitchen started in my house after dinner.

Every night after dinner.

My 3- and 6-year-olds are loving it. And to be honest, so are my husband and I. It’s a riot as we run around our downstairs, dodging the kitchen island, the couches, the kitchen table and chairs. We’ve had a few bruises, but mostly, we’ve had lots of laughs. It’s most fun when one of the kids is “it” and makes it his or her mission to get mom or dad. The rest of us can almost sit down during that time. And, well, my husband and I don’t “let” them catch us. They have to do it on their own. Each night ends in a round of giggles.

And did I mention? We have soft, cushy balls downstairs as well, ready for a game of dodge ball. Nope, I don’t have anything breakable downstairs (well, unless you count photo frames on the wall and we’ve only broken one of those, maybe two). While I’m not sure about my husband, I do remember growing up in a household where it wasn’t uncommon for mom or dad to grab shaving cream or something from the fridge or a water gun after dinner - and let the games begin.
