Holiday traditions anyone?

December 9th, 2008, 4:04 pm by Michelle Reese

As I wrote last week, I’m trying to add a little holiday magic to each day. We accomplished a lot last week - and I marked off every single plan I had except one: I missed the Westwood concert. In my defense, I’m taking two classes online and forgot I had final exams Sunday! The kids really enjoyed the “Polar Express” night at my daughter’s school - though she did ask, as Santa was leaving, “Where is the PRETEND Santa going?” Oh boy! (May I add, she followed up the question with “Where is Santa’s sleigh?”)

I’m going to post my plans for this week but again, am open to other ideas! Please share them… When do you put up your tree (mine still isn’t up)? When do you send out cards? What cookies do you make and when? Is there a holiday craft night? (I love that idea…)

One thing I did accomplish this weekend was the purchase of new pajamas. I started this last year and the kids loved it. On Christmas Eve, the doorbell rings (thanks to a neighbor) and outside Santa’s Elves leave the kids a new pair of pajamas for Christmas Eve with a reminder to go to bed early and close their eyes. It was a hoot watching them react last year!

Monday: We started to decorate with two boxes of decorations unpacked! (I also let the kids - egads on a school night! - watch a holiday movie while I finally addressed some Christmas cards)

Tonight: I’m going to attempt to make truffles with the kids. This should be interesting! I hope they are good enough to give to neighbors for the holidays.

Wednesday: Possible holiday concert for my nieces or we’ll break out another holiday book that hasn’t been opened since last year.

Thursday: My daughter’s holiday program at her preschool

Friday: Frosty the Snowman is on TV!

Saturday: Another first for us! We’re thinking of attending the APS Lighted Boat event at Tempe Town Lake (Free! Plus 50 tons of snow….) 4 p.m. start

Sunday: Church and - maybe? - we’ll get the TREE up! (I cant’ think of any previous year that our tree has not been up before the middle of December!)

Christmas Countdown

So far, so good. I have to say, I’m enjoying the time with the kids marking the holiday each night in a small way. I thought I would share the cards we made - some were blank cards and I just let the kids go crazy with stickers. The others I made a template for and the kids did the punches and added the stickers. Below: A bit too many stickers!

Welcome December!

This way to Christmas.

This way to Christmas.

We travelled to California for Thanksgiving last week and enjoyed four nearly blissful days on the beach!

When we arrived home, I awoke Sunday to realize it was THE LAST DAY OF NOVEMBER. Mind you, my kids have been playing Christmas tunes in the car since September, but somehow, this hit me out of the blue.

The holidays always zoom on by and I feel the kids miss out on the magic. I never plan anything. I just wing it and it feels everything suddenly comes to a crunch the last few days before Christmas. I want to try and slow down this holiday and enjoy the peace of it.

So I’m making a “one day at a time” holiday plan. I’ll probably make it up as I go. But I have a few things I want to do (including maybe getting the tree up before Dec. 24!) I’m sure there are other mothers out there who also have ideas: please share. We skipped the Polar Express at the Grand Canyon this year so I also am trying to figure where to see Santa (and no, sorry, not the mall).

Dec. 1: Kids make list of people they want to create handmade Christmas cards for (and limit it!).

Dec. 2: Pull out my excess supply of scrapbook paper and stickers (because you know I’ve not done any scrapbooking in months) for the kids to make cards.

Dec. 3 Rudolph is on TV. Make cards while we watch.

Dec. 4 Read a new Christmas book.

Dec. 5: Watch “The Polar Express” at my daughter’s preschool or at home and finish cards.

Dec. 6: Holiday playtime with grandparents.

Dec. 7: Westwood High School choirs are giving a free concert.

I’ll let you know how this works out!
